No, why schould they change it? If you have lag, try installing optifine or put your graphics lower you can also turn tower effect in-game off. Maybe this will helps.

Well, if they change it LESS people may lag without installing other stuff which is more effort. Name 3 negatives of removing the beam and making it sound based (and if someones volume doesn't work it can still kill enemies)
