Points in Bedrock

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I'm still a bit hazy on what this actually is.
When I do /points I get a number with an amount of points

Why is this here and what does it mean? I presume its a wip progress to the java points system because I get 3 points for a kill and 25 for a win. But just wondering because its very suspicious. xD
I'm guessing that it means we may in the future be able to buy cosmetics?
Any light on this would be much appreciated!

Currently on Bedrock, it doesn't have a feature.
People normally use it to "show off" to people.

They probably just ported it over from Java. I think the reason they aren’t using is is because they are earning too much money with the marketplace to be focused on adding products which could be bought with points. It’s a known discussion which gets ignored sadly
