Basically you make a wish, but the next person commenting has to corrupt it. I'll give examples using characters from my favorite anime; Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
Madoka Kaname: "I wish that witches didn't exist anymore, and for Magi to no longer have to fall into despair!"
Kyubey: "Granted, but you become a Goddess and nobody will remember your sacrifice except for Homura Akemi."
Homura Akemi: "I wish to be able to re-do my meeting with Madoka; except with me protecting her instead of the other way around!" (Basically being able to go back in time)
Kyubey: "Granted, but you have to watch Madoka die every single time in the end."
Sayaka Miki: "I wish for Kyosuke's hand to heal!"
Kyubey: "Granted, but Kyosuke will never fall in love with you and you'll fall into despair and become a witch."
Mami Tomoe: "I wish to live!"
Kyubey: "Granted, but your parents won't be alive and you'll be all alone."
Kyoko Sakura: "I wish for others to accept father's beliefs!"
Kyubey: "Granted, but your father will find out about you being a Magi and he'll kill your mother, sister, and himself leaving you the only survivor."
