They don't have to, other servers have a something called cross platform bungecord and waterfall. This allows them to connect from 1.9 and still have the old PVP and not have any new items or features from 1.9.Cubecrfat could do this but it could mess up their custom coded plugins.

Agreed, I do like 1.8 pvp, but lucky islands wouldnt work out that well with 1.8
