It's not exactly a secret http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Armor#Durability.
But still you see people that think spamming their pickaxes will help them win Op Eggwars duels o_O

In 1.12 both should deal about 20% of the regular damage every 0.5 seconds (after the invulnerability wears off). http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Damage#Attack_cooldown
So from my understanding they should deal a little more damage than swords if you spam them infinitely fast. Still way less than waiting for the cooldown on a sword though, so it's useless anyways.
