My Enchant Labr- Oh Wait Freebuild's Gone
Hello there. I’m not good at expressing myself so I’ll get straight to the point.

I have a problem, and that problem is the fact that I lose a vast majority of games I play on Cubecraft, or any other server for that matter. Due to my lack of ability, I have no friends or anyone to look up to or support me, as a rule of thumb for Minecraft servers in general is that friendships depend on skill, which I have already stated that I do not have and hence I have no friends.

I have been on Cubecraft for roughly four years now and no matter how hard I try or how much time passes, I don’t seem to get anywhere. The games that I do ‘win’ are due to me riding the coattails of those who can actually accomplish something.

It saddens me that, even after four years of experience, I am pushed aside and trampled by anyone and everyone, even though I am giving it my all. As a few of you may know, I was badly treated by a sizeable segment of the Hypixel community for three of my four years due to this lack of skill, which they viewed as comical. I’d wake up to people humiliating me in the lobbies, stalking me to other games and killing me over and over in ways that burned me with shame. Any staff which might have been present just stood and watched rather than helping me as they were supposed to.

Cubecraft is the only place I feel safe. But as more and more people surpass me, and the community becomes more and more toxic, I worry a repeat of my past experiences will occur.

My self esteem is at rock bottom. I struggle to find the will to even try to play games, as I constantly have a voice in the back of my head which tells me that I’m no good enough or that I’ll just fail again and humiliate myself.

I want to be independent. I want to stand on my own two feet and be able to prove myself. I want to be able to defend myself at least. And I don’t know how to do that. Due to having no friends, I’ve had to figure out possible solutions on my own, and all have done nothing for me.

This is where I need your assistance. I need advice on how to improve my skill. Do I need to join a Clan for peer to peer tutorage and protection? Do I need to do something else? Should I just give up entirely? I don’t know and I think that people who are worth a damn like yourselves do. So please, I need your advice. And yes, I know that I sound like a martyr, and you have no reason to believe what I say, but you can only take my word that everything I am saying is truthful, and my apologies that I cannot express myself well.

First thing that I will say right off the bat is chill out, remember that at the end of the day, it's a game and if you lose or win, it doesnt matter, the secret to being good at a game is enjoy it first, excel after. You should never ever try to get good at a game if you're not enjoying it, your enjoyment should come before winning always. You care too much and this affects how you play, its about being calm and collected, understanding that after you die in the game, you can restart, you can try again and its not the end of the world.

It took me a while to understand this, which is why I dont play on the server at all anymore, because I do not enjoy pvp Minecraft at all.

I would advice you to make more friends on the server. Like story stated above, enjoying the game is more enjoyable than playing to win. If you ever would like to play with me certain games to have fun instead of trying to win, then my door will always be open for you. This evening, I can play with you some games if you would like me to. Add me on Discord and let's have a friendly conversation together and have some fun! I would like to make you happier.

Waiting for you in the lobby ;3
My advice is to just leave a message in the Cubecraft discord server and see if anybody is up to play. Playing with other people is way more fun than alone.
You do not necessarily have to call, just playing with someone is more fun. There are more than enough people that are looking to play with others as you may have seen in the lobby's when people say "Who wants to join my party". I started out playing alone too, but I actually went to find people to play with later on and that was way better than just playing alone. :)

If you're looking for people to converse and hang out with you're always welcome to pop into Cube's discord, there's a lot of friendly people there. You could also part take in the Community Event Games, a bunch of people come together and have fun together even if you have skills or not. As for the toxic, that's pretty common anywhere, just best to ignore those nerds. Edit: (If you do decide to join their discord make sure you're informed and follow the rules, they're quite strict on that)

Tbh i have a similar problem - i never win anything lol. However, if people tease you or humiliate you because you are unskilled, then ignore them. There are plenty of people who dont ever win the game but their friends dont care and they can still have fun. Most ppl on the discord would happily play with you, even if it means they wont win.
Also, try tower defence, its a tactical game and not a skill game which means i win quite a lot compared to other gamemodes

My recommendation is to take a step back from Minecraft for a bit, and play a different game, just take a break from it. After a bit return to it and try again. That (to me) what helps a lot

Blockwars
The trick to getting good is to focus and go into each day with a goal in mind. Work on one thing at a time.

For example, day one or even week one, just try and use only crits, it doesn't matter about your aim or strafes, just make sure you always crit.
Following that, try and move around while you crit, you can start off by just jumping a bit to the side and hitting them. You can see how this process goes on.
Just set yourself a goal and focus on that element of pvp.

Another interesting thing is to think about exactly how you are strafing, try and be unpredictable in your patterns. Sometimes you want to stop and think about exactly which way you are strafing and instead of just blindly following muscle memory.

Personally, I think the best way to practice pvp is in games like Blockwars. In BlockWars, there aren't too many really high level players and without the stress of dying as you can respawn straight away. You can fight many different people and opt for slower or quicker fights depending on if you use high damage kits.

So many replies, so little advice. Whilst I haven't played Minecraft much since early 2017, I was rather good at 1.9 PvP and an avid FFA fan before the toxicity repelled me from it. Here's some advice I can offer:

Advice one - Pick your training ground wisely, and avoid populated FFA lobbies
You sound like somebody whose fuse has been cut short by repeated failures; you're now quick to anger, owing to the fact your hard work never pays off when surely, by now, you should be winning every game, right? Anger is a relatable response to repeated failure, but that doesn't make it a good one; frustration leads to poor decision making. Here's an example I am sure everybody reading can relate to: That one badass whom everybody fears, XxKidPwner76xX, just spawned in and, despite a close fight, they barely scraped the win against you. They say "ez" in the chat and you get heated, so you speed-run the spawn-in option and hurry back to them, hands sweaty and shaking, and you get utterly bodied. Furious, you beat your previous spawn-in speed-run by half a second and venture back to KidPwner, and you die again, this time to an even wider margin. They're now gloating in the chat about how you're easier than a Brussel sprout and you throw your mouse in rage, leaving the lobby ashamed and without any delicious glory.

Any almost-full FFA lobby (except Wings maps) is going to make you heated fast, because everybody's a tryhard who has to declare their victories to the entire chat, because Minecraft rep goes a long way when you're a teen with little else to do with your time. It is simply not a healthy environment to improve in, no matter your skill level. Hell, I played there to enjoy sniping with a bow, and the toxicity put me off Minecraft completely. FFA sounds like the perfect environment, but if anything, it'll regress your skills. If you're going to play FFA, stick to the low-populated lobbies that aren't full of tryhards.

Try finding players of a similar skill to you and challenge them to 1v1s so you may both improve. Better yet, challenge players who are greater than you and try to identify what's working for them, and where their performances may be improved upon. You must study your gameplay: Why did my lava bucket trick not work this time? Was it because I flashed the item at the start of the match, letting them know my intent to use it? Why did I miss all those critical hits? Why were they able to escape my pursuit so easily and restore their health to full?

Eggwars is both fun and an interesting training ground, since you can often prey on the weak many times over. Lucky Islands, whilst more consequential, offers an enjoyable and less serious place environment to experiment with unique play-styles, against players with widely varying equipment to your own. Also, Parkour and Arcade-based games benefit your overall movement, which is certainly vital to anything you do in Minecraft; my years of grinding Spleef and TNT Run made me a terrific Parkour player, and these skills allowed me to abuse map terrain in ways that benefited me. You don't have to fight people to improve at fighting, because fighting is only a small component of Minecraft combat.

Advice two - The Golden Rule of PvP
In 2017, I wrote a thread on exactly this subject, of improving at PvP. Here is my favourite excerpt, and the thing I hoped people would take away with them most:

Running away, and understanding the objective of PvP (Golden Rule)
Let me ask ya'll a question: What is the objective of most of the PvP games in Cubecraft? If you said something along the lines of "to kill people" then congratulations, you lose! The actual objective of the games, is to not die. These two things may sound similar, but they couldn't be more different.

Think about it: Sure, you might have thirty kills and counting in a game of Eggwars, but that doesn't mean that you're going to win the game. However, if you don't die, then you cannot lose the game. Kills only speed up victory, they don't give you it.

If you got the last question wrong, then don't worry! Here's your chance to redeem yourself. Here's the next question: Is running away a nooby thing? ...If you answered yes, then congratulations, you lose again! Wow, you're really bad at this.

If you're about to die, then run away. It's not nooby; it's strategical. Remember, the objective is to not die. Therefore, it'd be a noob move to stay in a fight that you know you're losing / going to lose. If the other player complains, that's to be expected. After all, you're delaying their victory. It's like when you type /kill in FFA, as to not give anybody else the satisfaction of killing you. Running away just rubs that salt in the wound a little harder than usual. Not only are they not killing you, but they're no longer fighting you, either. It's not only smart to run away, but massively increases your odds of not dying. Remember the golden rule? If you don't die, you won't lose the game.

Games the Golden Rule applies to:
-Skywars (and all variants)
-Eggwars (and all variants)
-FFA (and all variants)
-Duels (and all variants)
-Assassins
-Some Minerware microgames
-Ultra Hardcore (and all variants)
-Survival Games (and all variants)
-Paintball
-Line Dash
-Spleef
-Lucky Islands (and all variants)

Games the Golden Rule does not apply to:
-Blockwars (and all variants)
-Some Minerware microgames

LOL WHAT? How is running away a nooby thing to do? It brings you closer to victory (or delays your opponent's victory) in almost every single game on the server. If anything, you're a noob for suggesting that running away is noob behaviour!

Advice three - Dictate the fight
Want to know why camping is so effective? Because you're at an automatic disadvantage before the fight has even begun. The camper knows exactly where you are owing often to a height advantage, they can dip into safety at any time; they're at almost no risk at any time; and they have a major terrain advantage in games such as Eggwars, since you must traverse an abyss where a single hit may kill you.

Whether you be in a sky-based game or a ground-based game, use your terrain to your advantage, and abuse your opponent's predictability. If you evidently cannot overpower them fairly, then run away; they'll definitely follow, thinking you're a free kill. Lure them to lava, and resume the fight with the map hazard in mind; if you fall in and burn, so what? You'd have lost the fight regardless. If they fall in? Then you just won a fight you previously thought yourself unqualified for. You were the smarter player, and therefore you were the better one.

Refuse any 1v1s that are not on your terms. Refuse to fight on any terrain you cannot exploit to your own benefit. Refuse to approach anybody with greater gear than you, or insist they destroy some of their items before you'll engage.

Advice four - Wisdom
The smarter player can always overpower the stronger; Athena > Ares. Owing to my heavy play-time for example, I've optimised the FFA map "Classic" perfectly so that I always hold the advantage. Maining the bow kit, if I am near the streets I can dip into the sewers to gain an unbeatable terrain advantage; if inside a building, I can ascend to the roof and gain a tremendous advantage with my Knockback sword; if near the desert I can camp the island with my bow; and if I am near the forest, I can abuse both the river and the easily accessed trees to maintain a gap against any pursuers. Map knowledge goes a very long way; if you're not focusing on what's around you at all times you are playing the game wrong, regardless of the game in question.

Don't just rush the first player you see and hope for the best! What gear are they wearing? How competent are they; are they landing consistent critical hits against other people? Do they have friends nearby who might intervene? What's their connection like? This isn't Pokemon; you do not have to challenge everybody you see.

If a player is running away, they aren't going to stop to reengage unless the circumstances suit them; sometimes, it's best to let a player get away than to chase them into their team's headquarters, or into lava or to a tall height. Killing is not your win condition; being the last player alive is. Killing that noob will not give you the win unless they are the last player remaining, but dying to that noob's clever tactic will guarantee you a loss.

Got nothing good from your Skywars chests? Lay low and loot whatever's left behind; if you sneak and bury yourself into a wall, nobody can reasonably find you. Wait for the chest refill, or until the area is quiet, and upgrade your gear before venturing into combat. What can you possibly expect if you rush a fully-geared player with a stone sword, leather hat and iron legs?

Are there only three players left to your Skywars game? Deliberately avoid all combat. I'm serious, heck run in circles around the map's perimeter if you have to, but under no circumstance should you attack another player. Doing so means you must risk your life in two fights to win the game, whereas the outcast player must win only one. It also puts you in grave danger of that outcast, who will be looking to clean up whatever damage was done to the victor. Don't give that outcast such a major, unbeatable advantage; be that outcast, and refuse to fight until the number of players dwindles down to two. Remain observant though, paying heavy attention to the fight; you want to take the win with as little strain as possible, and if that means jumping the victor when they're on two hearts, do it.

If you play smart and out-think your enemy, you can genuinely beat 99% of the players on the server.

Advice five - There are no laws in the wild
Forget about "honour"; you'll gain plenty of it when you're winning every match you play later on. Don't neglect that dude in full diamond just because they're low on health; take any win you can get, because a point is a point and a full set of enchanted diamond armour makes you the biggest threat on the field, and not somebody against you.

Bow-spamming is not "nooby", it's strategical and an intended mechanic that helps maintain a gap between your opponent, so that you may use your underestimated weapon in its intended environment; from afar.

Camping, spleefing, running, potion-use, lava and water buckets, etc., all are fair game if they give you an upper hand. You are under no obligation to accept a 1v1, and certainly not on the challenger's terms. Instead, rub salt in the wound by pouncing your challenger with potions and lava whilst they're fighting somebody else. After all, you get a point from it, and they learn that you're not to be toyed with.

Advice six - Real-life Equipment
You are not going to become a threatening player if you're playing on your grandma's Windows 95, or on a laptop trackpad at 40FPS. Assuming you're playing on a semi-decent PC and can achieve a stable FPS, you can get a satisfactory mouse and keyboard for about $40 or so. I have personally always used my default Microsoft mouse, and I can attest to the fact it's garbage and does not bring out my full potential; it's slippery, it's small and uncomfortable, and it moves too jaggedly. If I were to upgrade to literally anything else, I would see some improvement to both my in-game accuracy and to my irl comfort.

If you cannot upgrade from a trackpad or hold a stable FPS, this probably isn't the game for you (I suggest Oldschool Runescape instead!)

Advice seven - Understand the game
Here's another excerpt from my aforementioned thread, which by the way I shall link at the bottom of this reply. This excerpt explains how the game's mechanics actually work, at least as of Version 1.9. Some of its information may be outdated or incorrect; I am not in a position to verify it, having not played frequently in over two years. Nonetheless, it may help you.

Learn which version you're playing on
This one, you'd think would go without saying... Sadly, statistics show that approximately 100% of players on the server are still spam-clicking. This is inexcusable! Don't worry though, Athena's got you covered. I'm going to show you how to actually deal some damage to your opponent. Keep in mind that this applies only to 1.9 (So, every game on Cubecraft, minus that version of FFA that nobody plays).

In 1.9 and all versions surpassing it, the player will deal more damage depending on how much "energy" they have. The player's energy will deplete upon swinging their weapon, and will recharge after a brief cool-down. Swords have the fastest cool-down time of all tools, whereas axes have the longest. Overall, swords deal a greater DPS (Damage Per Second), however axes are more intimidating and, if used well alongside strafing, can body your opponent with minimal damage. Keep in mind that when your energy is depleted, you also deal far less knockback. Spamming may be useful when your opponent is on the very edge of a block, but otherwise, it's not worth doing; they'll be able to resist any and all knockback received. Keep note of this, because it's a mistake that I see a lot of people making.

To better help you break the habit of spam-clicking, here's a neat little feature that Mojang implemented.

There, problem solved! Now, the game will actually tell you when to attack! That's right, you can still play the game despite having little skill; it's noob-friendly!

In-depth understanding of how damage output is calculated

Brace yourselves kids, this part gets pretty lengthy. Feel free to skip to the next section if you like, it basically just explains in further detail how damage is calculated and whatnot.

The damage that you deal is formulated by five factors:
-Weapon base damage
-Weapon enchantments (particularly Sharpness)
-Use of mechanics (i.e. Critical hits, Sweeping)
-Potion effects
-Armour*

*I would cover how armour influences damage dealt/received, but it's very confuzzling to me. I'd rather not explain things that I'm not too knowledgeable about myself. Basically, the better your armour, the more damage you'll resist x

Weapon base damage
A weapon's base damage is the number of hitpoints that will be dealt to a naked opponent. One hitpoint is the equivalent of half a heart. This means that despite players having only ten hearts by default, they have twenty hitpoints. The base damage of every common weapon in Minecraft is displayed below:

Swords:
upload_2017-8-2_13-48-45-png.136023

Source of image & more information: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Sword

Axes:
upload_2017-8-2_13-49-11-png.136024

Source of image & more information: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Axe

Obviously diamond weapons are superior overall. Now, you might notice that a wooden axe is supposedly as strong as a diamond sword. However, because the sword's recovery time (sadly not displayed in the diagram) is far quicker than an axe, the player using the diamond sword would deal far greater damage (as displayed in the diagrams: Diamond sword DPS = 11.2 (11.2 hitpoints dealt per second), Wooden axe DPS = 5.6 (5.6 hitpoints dealt per second)).

Again though, these are not indications of how much damage you will receive when using these weapons. Most likely, a skilled axe-wielder will take far less damage than a skilled sword-wielder. This is because the axe-wielder will have the knowledge to avoid combat until their energy has recharged.

Weapon enchantments
I will be talking exclusively about the 'Sharpness' enchantment here, as I don't know much about how the likes of fire damage is calculated.

There are five tiers of Sharpness enchantment: I, II, III, IV, V.
The first tier, I, will provide an additional one hitpoint of damage, or 0.5 hearts. Every subsequent tier will provide an additional half hitpoint of damage, or 0.25 hearts. The additional damage for each tier is provided below:

Sharpness I - Additional 0.5 hearts
Sharpness II - Additional 0.75 hearts
Sharpness III - Additional 1 hearts
Sharpness IV - Additional 1.25 hearts
-Sharpness V - Additional 1.5 hearts

For those wondering, this is why the 'Swordsman' kit in Skywars is so effective. It's an iron sword with Sharpness II, meaning that it has a base damage of six (or three hearts), plus 0.75 (or three hearts & three quarters). It deals a quarter of a heart more damage than a diamond sword, making it the best sword in the game outside of enchanting, in both Basic and Normal modes.

Use of mechanics (Critical hits, Sweeping)
Mechanics are things that were implemented by Mojang to give especially skilled players an upper-hand. Think of it like "teching" in Super Smash Bros if you're familiar with the term, where during a falling animation, players are able to shield during a specific number of frames to immediately get up, allowing them to escape a potential punish from their opponent. I will discuss two mechanics here: Critical hits, and Sweeping.

Critical hits are a system that benefit every type of weapon in Minecraft. They increase the base damage of your weapon's attack by 50%, or 1.5x! This is massive. If you're landing a bunch of critical hits on your opponent and they aren't, you'll almost always win the fight regardless of skill. Keep in mind that this only increases the base damage, and will not factor in enchantments.

These are the conditions that must be met in order for a critical hit to land:
upload_2017-8-2_14-18-41-png.136025

Source of image & more information: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Damage#Critical_Hits

Therefore, the best way to land consistent critical hits is to enter a sprint-jump, wait until your jump ends and you begin to fall, and then cancel your sprint and attack. It will take a little getting used to, but once you've got the technique down, you'll be dishing out critical hits at an equally fast rate as an ordinary hit.

Sweeping
Sweeping is a mechanic with very little applicability in Cubecraft, so I'll keep it short. Basically, when standing still and swinging with a sword, nearby enemies will also receive a small portion of damage (typically one damage; half a heart) and knockback (80% of the usual amount). The Sweeping edge enchantment will increase the damage, however it isn't really worth getting into due to a void of applicability in this mechanic. Just keep in mind that this mechanic affects only swords, so be wary when swinging your sword around people that you're teaming with in say, FFA or Assassins. The effect will only occur if you're still, so keep moving and landing critical hits to avoid this problem.

Potion effects

Strength

The 'Strength' effect will increase your base damage by three, times the level of the effect itself. For example:

Strength I - Increases your base damage by three (1.5 hearts)
Strength II - Increases your base damage by six (3 hearts)

Resistance
The 'Resistance' effect will decrease your damage taken by 20%, times the level of the effect itself. For example:

Resistance I - Decreases damage received by 20%
Resistance II - Decreases damage received by 40%
Resistance III - Decreases damage received by 60%
Resistance IV - Decreases damage received by 80%
Resistance V - Decreases damage received by 100% (Yes, this will make you immune to all sources of damage, minus the void)

The most vital piece of advice
The objective of any and all video games is to have fun; if you aren't having fun, you aren't playing the game properly. If you truly are not improving whatsoever, would you not be happier playing Minerware, Parkour or Arcade instead?

Good luck on your future noob-slaying endeavours, and remember to have fun.

Just wrote an entire thread's worth of content for a game I don't even play anymore. This is my life now. It's depressing, but it is what it is.
