So I use to play on this server back in the day and there was a game mode where you would select a class. When the game starts you would collect gold and once you have enough you would buy buildings and with the gold you would use the gold to upgrade abilities

Sounds to me like Moneywalls or Tower Defense. Can't quite put my finger on it yet .-.

If it's definitely an old game, it's Money Walls. If it's not, it's Tower Defense. Log on to the server, try it, and see if if it is what you are talking about.
