I don't think it financially pays off for you to have a server. You need to have developers, builders, and a certain amount of mods (based on your server's size). By getting plugins from other servers, public maps etc. your server won't get far. You need to spend a lot of time on making it perfect, and then advertising it. You will also need to pay for hosting the server's website and the server itself.
I was thinking about opening a server too, with my friend, but you are gonna spend a lot of time making it for sure, and it might end up as a failure. There are servers with 500+ slots, custom plugins, custom maps... but with 0 players.
If you really wanna make money thru Minecraft, you can open a YouTube channel, and if you get a lot of subs and views, you can monetize your videos. You can also stream on Twitch, and people are gonna support you for sure if they like your streams! (For example, someone donated $420.69 to Dion xD)

I have a YouTube channel, and my server is just for fun. It doesn't need to be popular in my opinion.
