Whenever I rod someone, it always seems like they are too far away for it to do anything, or too close so they can combo me first. Tell me how do use a rod. Simple as that.

(havent watched it, just the first one I found). It is way easier to learn it this way then to ask it on the forums.
I don’t use that kit and never paid attention to it, so I probably forgot that kit.

They are actually most useful for pvp. It knocks them back so you can combo them easier. You must have noticed people throwing them?
The best way to rod someone, is to wait the are close to you. If to think they are to far away, use a snowball or an egg. This will keep them away for a while. It is problem to spam the rod for a bit and wait till the rod will reach your opponent. When the rod hits your opponent, push.
There are no rods in 1.9 or higher.
Try to learn it on MMC or Lunar or some other pvp server. Then not UHC or something, but just classic gamemode. It is really usefull indeed, but it only gets in the way when you dont know how to use them. Or watch some tutorial on yt, like this one:
There are rods in 1.9+ (Fisherman kit and pretty sure overpowered has them aswel) please do your research before posting ^-^
You can’t find rods in chests right?
