A lot of the time it depends on the actions and vibes of the player next to you.. if they look like they have no clue what they're doing just 5 to 7 on maps like golf, if it's looking likely they are going to be more of a challenge then sometimes an extra 4 for armour and 1 for steak.

Oh and sometimes 32 iron for sword and 4 gold for a couple of gaps just to traumatise the "OMG you bought a sword" types. :P
