Best thing to do is play in duo or squads first, get into a match of overpowered(optional) and either you or another player grabs diamonds and gold (if needed). Build a wall surrounding your island and smother your egg in obsidian. I’ve used this tactic many times, and I’ve never failed yet.

You could also buy a bow and just start shooting people off the island if they come to you.

You forgot some, you should also spam your island with towers, make your bridge 5 blocks wider, surround it with walls so that you can't fall of by accident. You should make full chain armor, since that's totally not a waste of stuff. Make several extra sets for your teammates or you if you die.
AND: up your irongenerator to max level.

orrrrrrrr, you can just play normally and just kill ppl and there eggs. :)
