FFA as it stands is an amazing game mode by virtue of its simplicity and unique hangout spot for players. The lack of rules on teaming make this place great for PvP experimentation and creates a free atmosphere. Though it is not lacking in any way, maybe a Chaos Mode could be created as an alternative.
The Chaos mode would essentially be FFA but with random lucky blocks spawning around the map. To prevent the map from being ripped apart, the terrain would not be destroyable. Lucky blocks should not alter the terrain drastically. This means no Melon Towers, no Archer towers etc.
However, the Lucky Blocks would drop wands, potions, auto allow you to equip special armour, spawn horses, and allow world events, like Ghast Spawns.
The Map Issues:
Some maps like sanctuary and Mirage are closed up and will not suit this gamemode very well. Classic, Savannah and Flatlands are examples of where this gamemode might thrive. The caveat is that players with grapplehook bows and ender pearls can reach areas that are normally inaccessible.
To accomodate for the increased amount of entities, cap players at 40 per map.
