Hey everyone, I wanted to address a serious issue with survival worlds: griefing. After we had an encounter with a few griefers this week we never invited to our survival world, my friends and I did some digging and found this entire system griefers are using to find servers.
There has been a recent increase in attacks from groups like MLPI (Mojang Loss Protection Inc.) and the 5th Column, who have been destroying innocent players' Minecraft worlds. These groups use automated bots to search for unprotected servers and attack them. The good news is, protecting your server from these attacks is simple. The key is focusing on security, not just hiding your server.
These groups, who call themselves "renovators" or "anti-piracy crusaders," use bots to find servers that aren’t protected. They destroy players' worlds using things like lava and then mock the victims. The truth is, these groups enjoy causing trouble and gaining "points" for ruining more servers. They try to trick server owners into joining their Discord by offering fake “world recovery” services, but their real goal is to either troll the owners or demand fake ransoms, claiming players have broken the game’s rules.
The best way to protect your server is to turn on a whitelist. The griefers rely on bots to search for unprotected servers, but once you enable your whitelist (by typing the command "/whitelist on"), those bots won’t be able to join. If you’re running an authenticated server (online-mode), this simple step blocks almost all the attacks. Even if someone has your server’s IP, they won’t be able to connect and will just get kicked with a message saying the server is on the whitelist. This is a simple but effective way to stop the bots and prevent these attacks.
Please do this if your server with friends is currently not whitelisted, it will save you so much stress and time!
