I wanted some of you to elaborate with me on this difficult subject. For those of you who do not know what sentience is, it is the ability to perceive or feel things. Of course we are talking about an artificial being which can "feel" or portray emotions. But would this just be an elusive and cunning way of the robot's programming bringing out those emotions? How would we even know if it was actually acting on a true emotional level, or if it were just to be mimicking them very well? What would we look for, and how would we look for it? And when would it be safe to say, "Okay, now it is actually acting upon it's own will, so therefore it is showing it's own individuality"? The real question at hand is how do we actually code emotions and implement them into a robot. Perhaps neuromorphic engineering is the way to go. Neuromorphic engineering is an interdisciplinary subject that takes inspiration from biology, physics, mathematics, computer science, and electronic engineering to design artificial neural systems, such as vision systems, head-eye systems, auditory processors, and autonomous robots, whose physical architecture and design principles are based on those of biological nervous systems. Ethics are also a huge issue to be programmed in a robot. And could be quite catastrophic if it decides it doesn't like us. How much "free will" should we allow them to have? And to what extent should they be allowed to feel emotions? Or should they have any at all? If a robot in the near future becomes indistinguishable from humans, do they deserve rights like we do? I personally think it would be really cool to build a robot brain based on philosophical concepts that deal with the five main branches of philosophy. Which are:
Metaphysics- Study of Existence. | What's out there?
Epistemology- Study of Knowledge. | How do I know about it?
Ethics- Study of Action | What should I do?
Politics- Study of Force | What actions are permissible?
Esthetics- Study of Art | What can life be like?

This is probably the most deep and thoughtful post I have ever seen on the forums... wow.
Technology has come so far recently and I'm almost certain we will get to the stage where artificial intelligence is able to portray human emotions and feelings (I certainly hope so anyway) but, as you said, do we really want to give so much free will to such a human-like robot?
In conclusion, I do believe that around the year 2050, we will have the capability to create such an A.I but whether we decide to give it all the free will humans have, is a different matter.
(Great idea for a thread btw. Not sure if it has much to do with Cubecraft but... xD)

Great topic! I really wish to see human-level artificially intelligence in my lifetime. I somehow doubt this will be completely achieved by 2050 (that is just 34 years away!)... however I can imagine complex software that can "fake" human intelligence (i.e. pass a turing test), like a really smart version of Siri by that time.

If a sentinent AI is ever created it should in my opinion have similar rights to a human, everthing else seems really cruel.

never though of discussing artificial intelligence in a minecraft forum :D

IMHO AI will never be actual Intelligence, just scripted versions of common human traits.
Organic engineering though

But aren't we just scripted organisms? :) (Consciousness) I suppose what I'm implying is that, what if we are able to unlock the secret of consciousness, and give the robot that trait of being able to understand, or at least give it the ability to contemplate it's own existence.

You see, we're more than just meat and bones fused together with armony, we're human beings.

Quatum Computers, (We are not even close into making Quatum Computers btw)
The problem with this technology is that it's able to recreate itself...
So if you make a Robot with a freewill that also means it wants more of him to not feel alone...
Or the artificial being will make smarter versions of its own,
I don't like to go deeper into this topic it could get creepy and disturbing (The possibility of the Dark Web growing futher, or Robot Revolution)

But if there was an other way to make artificial life and to maintain it peaceful,
Well look at the possibilities new Races(Dirty mind srry), Technology and we may get to know more about our Universe...
There is still a lot of discover:
-Our purpose
-Why the Universe exist
-Is there a creator
etc.
Artificial life could help extremely with this process of knowledge and life,
They could help us with colonization, space travel, research, new medicines...

Anyway to make such a being will take a lot and a lot of time,
Yes technology advanced more than ever last century but we are not even close to make an artificial being,
Well it's kinda possible but to maintain it peaceful...
Common people there is still war in this world, pretty sure such Robots will also be programmed to do other jobs (if you get what I mean)
Okay okay, getting off topic...
Anyway making such being before or on 2050 is too soon...
We don't posses that much knowledge to begin discussing about such a topic.

Metaphysics- Study of Existence. | What's out there?
Epistemology- Study of Knowledge. | How do I know about it?
Ethics- Study of Action | What should I do?
Politics- Study of Force | What actions are permissible?
Esthetics- Study of Art | What can life be like?
Wouldn't that be programming...
You don't give it freewill, that's more like artificial freewill...
It sounds interesting but I have technically no clue about this topic :P

But after all, the human brain is just a giant heap of neurons connected with each other that follow simple chemical reactions. Couldn't we just in theory build a computer program that simulates neurons (simple rules like "if neuron #546 has input y then activate neuron #67757 and make a connection with neuron #732"). Imagine to initialize this programm we scan the brain of a person and rebuild every single neuron and their connections identical in our simulation. Would you agree or disagree that such a so called "whole-brain-emulation" is sentinent, i.e. has the personality, hopes, dreams ect. of the original person?

I think it boils down to if one agrees that consiousness is a consequence of the structure of our brains and the rules of physics or something else that cannot be computed (like a soul).

Not really...

Yeah, that.

:/ technically not really 'Artificial Life' more like a Robot with a Human brain...
It woudn't show emotion unless you activate it...

Well in my experiment we copied an entire person's mind, that includes their emotions. The program just simulates the neuronal activities in a normal brain (and an emotion is the result of neurons interacting with eachother).
