I`ve got a sphere of glass preventing players from going off into nowhere and I have put down a layer of blocks preventing players to go too far down underwater! I also added in some more islands (even a giant rubik cube xP

Make it in a single player world and get single player commands/world edit wrapper, then you will have both a larger space and all world edit command.

Actually u can just rub bukkit server (no portforward etc.) and U can still join.

Then u can get any plugin ya want and it`s kinda singleplayer cos I think if someone is using same router as u then they can connect idk. :/
