Bedrock Magic & Mayhem drops question

might sound dumb but my friend and I were curious as to how drops work. Is it so where as long as you hit the mob no matter who kills it you can get drops from it? Or is it only the person who kills it or something can get drops?

couldn't find an answer in searching so hopefully this is ok to ask here, ty in advance.

It's as long as you do damage to it and the mob is killed that you get the loot. But you don't have to kill it
