I can pierce the best armor, and devastate an entire land. Yet for all my power, I am nothing without a host to wield me. I am dangerous, but not a weapon. What am I?

Laser?

It seems that I took the science fiction/fantasy approach xD

Lasers can pierce armor (or Sci-fi ones can anyway)
Lasers can devastate a land (like when a laser battle is happening, or when the Death Star activates in Star Wars)

Lasers have to come from a laser gun/blaster to work, so a laser can’t work without a person controlling one of those things (the “host”)
A laser is dangerous but not a weapon, since you have to use a laser gun/blaster to shoot out a laser, so the laser isn’t technically the weapon

a laser can count as a weapon so yeah it's definitely virus especially after mentioning the mystery object needing a host, that just gave it away
