If I get skyblock rank and make a 3 or 4 player island can my friends who don't have skyblock rank be able to join me if I invite them or do they need it

As long as your friends have a co-op profile slot free they should be able to join your island. If they don't, they will either need to leave their existing co-op profile or buy the skyblock rank themselves to get extra slots.

A non skyblock rank player is able to join one profile with his friends, this is referred to as a 'co-op' profile and is the second slot. The perk of having skyblock rank is that you're able to have 3 co-op profiles instead of the usual 1.

All of this means that you can invite your friends IF they do not already have their one co-op filled. If they do they'd need to leave that first.
