Pumpkins wont generate

Hi I play skyblock and I'm currently trying to get the Pumpkin Slayer quest complete but it says they cannot produce and just stay as stalks. Does anyone know how to fix this? It would be greatly appreciated!

Hey, can you maybe send me a picture of how you planted them? They can't grow on some blocks :)

Is there a directly adjacent dirt/grass block (in a + around it) on the same Y-level? That is one of the growth requirements for a pumpkin.
