Not getting XP from gold?

I keep reading that to get higher XP levels for enchanting, gold gives a lot from smelting. I'm not getting any XP at all, either from mining the ore or smelting it in a furnace. Is it because I'm not on Java? Is it a bug, am I doing it wrong, or is it just by design / not implemented yet and I need to switch to lapis mining for XP? My mob grinder isn't fast enough to get the really high levels.

It's an issue (or rather a lack of vanilla implementation) with the server api, so I doubt a fix is imminent. Still worth reporting it though, you never know.
