Explain the new system that replaced the signs

I wasn't there when it got replaced, but I would like to know why this is better and why signs are worse.

The only reason I can think if are purely decorative. It looks better (minus the ugly, filled menu with all the maps of course). Other then that I don't see how it is practical and especially can't see why it is better then the signs. I have to open the menus and look through tons of maps and pages to find a single game with at least a handful of people in it. Why? Signs give you a good overlook in a second. This does not. What is the advantage I'm not seeing here?

I believe it was to help games fill up faster since players now all have to join through the selection instead of signs.
I did like having the signs, but I generally use the quick join anyway so it doesn’t matter too much to me.
