Alrighty so I decided to be a grammar child today and noticed this on the server:

I'm pretty sure the word "got" doesn't need to be there.
"You currently have ______ points!" is much better.

"have got" is still grammatically correct ._.
"You've got 12 points" -> "You have got 12 points"

but what does "to got" mean? It is a verb. If anything, it would mean the same as "to have", so the word got is pointless in this case

"Got" is the past tense of to get.
In this case, "have got" and "have" means the exact same thing

So it is useless to have the word got in there. If anything, it makes it sound bad as well

And so it’s useles to remove it. If we would have to edit every time someone thinks a sentence sounds bad, but is right, is wasted time for other stuff to develop.

I'm guessing you think it sounds bad because you've only use "to have" in situations like this?
I mean, if you didn't know it was grammatically correct, doesn't that automatically mean you prefer using the one you already knew was grammatically correct?
Anyways, I don't see a point in changing this, and I don't see any difference/phrase that sounds better between these two.
