Heyy everyone!

I noticed something a bit odd with chat notifications and wanted to make a suggestion about it.

Right now, if you have Notifications enabled (in Settings), you'll hear a sound when someone messages you with /msg or mentions your name in chat. However, /fmsg doesn't play any sound at all.
Sometimes those messages can be important, but they’re much easier to miss without a notification sound. You could easily miss a message from a friend at an unexpected moment, especially if you’re not actively looking at chat.

Another thing to consider is how these commands are used:
  • /msg is typically used when someone is in the same game or map as you
  • /fmsg works across the entire network

For example, you could be in the lobby while your friend is in an EggWars, SkyBlock, or FFA game, and they can still message you using /fmsg. Because of that, these messages can be just as important, if not more.

I also want to point out that /fmsg can be very easy to miss in modes like FFA, where the chat is often filled with kill messages.

As for the sound itself (for/fmsg), I tested a few options and really liked the Note Block Chime:
/playsound minecraft:block.note_block.chime block @p ~ ~ ~ 1 1 1

For reference, /msg currently uses Note Block Pling:
/playsound minecraft:block.note_block.pling block @p ~ ~ ~ 1 1 1

That’s just a suggestion for the type of sound, it doesn’t have to be exactly that. 🎶

What do you think? If you have any other suggestions or ideas, I’d be happy to read them.

Thank you for taking the time to read this! 😄

Dear @Satirit,

I would like to reply to this wonderful suggestion of yours.

I fully agree with what you’ve said, this is honestly a really underrated suggestion. It makes a lot of sense for /fmsg to have a notification sound, especially since those messages can be just as important as /msg, if not more. It could just be me, but I usually miss a few /fmsg messages because there’s no notification sound, especially when the chat is busy or I’m focused on playing.

It actually feels strange that this isn’t already a feature.

And ehhh... this definitely deserved more agrees, but the forums have been pretty quiet lately

Great idea, thanks for your suggestion!

I agree with this. /fmsg messages are definitely easy to miss, especially in modes with a lot of chat spam. I don’t think the exact sound matters too much any notification sound would be good as long as it alerts you that you received a message.

I agree, that was just a suggestion, it doesn't have to be that exact sound. It could be any, as you said, but having separate sounds could help players tell the difference between /msg and /fmsg. 😄
