I haven't tried this myself yet and I might be wrong about how it works, but I have been told that leaving during a game does not count towards your deaths. I think that's a bad idea because it encourages leaving during a fight when you notice you're about to die. This is a problem because you don't drop your items when dying and (I think) your opponent will not receive the health boost.

So my suggestion is to handle leaveing players like this:
If you leave during a game, it counts as a death.
In game it's handled as a regular death, so you drop all your items and if someone hit you shortly before, he will get the kill and the regeneration.

I like part of this suggestion. The part I like is; the dropping of the items when they leave/disconnect.
The reason why I don't like;
If you leave during a game, it counts as a death.
Is because for those people who like to keep their KD clean and reasonably alright (like me) it would be a struggle if you have bad connection. I get the idea of people leaving when it is obvious that they are dead, or just leaving when they want to.
But what would happen if there was a hacker in there and you leave? +1 death

I think if there's a hacker and you leave it's fair to count that as a death, as you would possibly have died anyways. I see that getting disconnected is a problem. I like the idea someone suggested, that you should be able to reconnect to a running game.
That would be more work to implement, but might be a better experience for players. If you disconnect from a game, you would get replaced by a dummy player that can still be attacked and killed, but won't get targeted by mobs. If you manage to log in before getting killed you get the chance to rejoin the running game.

I don't really care about other players death stats so whether disconnecting from the game is counted as a death or not doesn't matter to me. The gear they have and the regen I would've got does so I like your idea.
I dislike allowing people to relog though, would encourage a lot of combat logging.

That's why I mentioned the dummy player. I'm not 100% convinced myself, but the idea is that if you log out you get immediately replaced by a fake player that can't move but still get attacked so others will just see you freezing in place. This happens already when you loose connection until the server decides to kick you out. There would also have to be a time limit so people don't just go to 0 5 0 and log out to prolong the game.

That's the issue, even with say a 3 minute window to relog back in, someone could do this and then do it again and again and again.

You wouldn't really get an advantage by it though, since others could still go to your location and kill you. You'd be better off just sneaking in place.

Possibly.
But what if they're above the nether? Or at the bottom/top of the over world?
They could still hide there without logging out, which would be even better for them since they can sneak.
I don't know what happens when you are in the nether when the glowing effect sets in, if nothing happens that would be a huge problem (regardless of relogging) since it might be impossible for a player in the overworld to make a nether portal once the border shrinks to its smallest size.

Only three losers would sit in the nether when the borders closed up though :p

It's not a compettitive server, deaths don't count to the leaderboard, so don't worry about deaths. Just take it as another part of games player.

My point isn't that I care about my death stats, but that some players will leave the game to get better stats. It's the same in duels, leaving a game doesn't count as a death and I see a lot of players leaving the game when they are about to lose.

So your saying add combat log to uhc? Sounds legit +1

I've been kicked twice now and had to go before the end of a few games but I wouldn't mind this happening. There are way too many people leaving when they are about to be killed so that I don't get any regeneration/items ;-;
