There is a rule on the Forum rules that state "No Necro-Posting." This I believe most people are very aware of. I just had a friend accidentally necro-post though. This gave me the idea to have the Threads auto lock unless a Staff member specifies that it doesn't lock. This should prevent people from having good intentions and then realizing that they were actually necro-posting. I think no one should be able to have good intentions and then be breaking the rules and if an auto-locking feature was in place that would prevent this issue. This will also make lock requests very minimal and only when they are actually necessary to keep the forums a pleasant environment.

I know this has been suggested before. However, the thread was too old and was already locked.

Ho would the auto-lock know when the question is answered? Also, some posts, like media could last forever because a youtuber constantly posts a vid in it.
This would not work.

Auto lock is only to lock threads older than 2 weeks.
If media threads are in constant use, restrict this to everything else.
This in fact would work.

Yes. I actually would prefer to change the rules so that posting on old threads is allowed as long as the topic is still relevant, maybe with a warning displayed on top of the reply text box. But as long as posting on old threads (other than news) is never allowed I don't see why it should even be possible.

Maybe have the auto lock time 1-2 months unless manually locked? That way 5 month old threads that people search for will be locked if a staff member didn't do it.

The only problem with that is if you reply on something that is over 2 weeks old then it is considered Necro-posting. The whole purpose is to prevent Necro-posting. They could request it be set to a longer time or never lock by the staff.

I think this would be a good idea. I accidentally necro posted on another server. I think this could be helpful.
