Guess what increases level? Experience.
So yeah, USELESS is not really appropriate, even though Experience doesn't really add that much to your game.
Points are what you're looking for (I think)
You can buy "kits" in games and temporary gear in PvP FFA battles with Points.
You can earn them by playing, winning, doing challenges and getting Achievements.

Ehm it unlocks certain cosmetic items and in the future I think you get prizes after reaching a certain lvl like Cubelets or Points....
It also shows how much you play...
But nothing in gameplay otherwise people with a higher level would have a giant advantage against new players....

It means does it have any gameplay effect? If not, then I'm declaring experience USELESS (because of the previous answers, I have already declared it).
Well, they do have effect on "gameplay" (in lobbies you can have accessories that make you stand out from the other players) But if you see "gameplay effect" as advantages in minigames and games, then no.
