What can i do with .schematic files?

When you download a map of your build in creative you are given a .schematic file. Does anyone know what i can do with it or how i can put it into a single player world?

After a quick Google search it seems to be related to world edit. You may find this website useful: http://www.minecraft-schematics.com/worldedit/tutorial/

The schematics are used by World edit to create the build (from what I can understand).

If I'm right, you can use schematics to view builds (which are in a .schematic file).

.Schematics can be used with worldedit to spawn a copy of a selected area. They can also be used by schematica (A forge mod) to allow you to see a ghost model of the world, and then copy it in manually or using printer.
