The server is about to updated to 1.19 so maybe it would be nice to have an "SMP event" where players have to kill the staff-members? It would be a small manhunt and fun for both sides. Obviously the staff would have better gear to start with and players need to work their way up to stop them from killing the ender-dragon

It can also be a normal SMP to have fun for a bit instead of having to slaughter and kill everyone in a really sweaty and tactical game of Skywars!

might as well make an offical smp on the server

Nah just make it an event so it will keep the magic touch called "bring more ppl on"
