Sword or Axe?

To be honest, when I am PVP'ing I use the sword, but the axe has more damage.
Which is more ideal?

I personaly like using axes but my friend who is better at pvp, preferres swords. I think that mojang balanced the two weapons very nicely.
Keep in mind that the axe has slower hits. I honestly think it is a matter of preference.

I made a "quick" analysis of the different weapons over time (accumelated damage)

As you can see the axe deals a lot more damage over time, but since you need to wait longer between hits you need better accuracy as missing one hit will throw you back a lot as opposed to the sword.
