I know that I've been helping people the last 2 days with things on the Support forums. but I see people locking it so no one can respond again.
is it just that you type locked, and it'll get locked or do you need to click something etc.
I'd love to know so I can lock threads that are already taken care off.

You cannot lock threads, only members of the staff team can. They do a certain action, and then the thread gets locked. They only do this when someone necro-posted on a thread (when it's no longer relevant), if a question has been answered, and for some other reasons.
