Java Skyblock Giant Jungle Trees

I've been trying to grow giant jungle trees, because growing small jungle trees doesn't give you very many saplings. I have 4 jungle tree saplings next to each other in a square and they are all fully generated, so I don't understand what I'm doing wrong. I've tried closing Minecraft and restarting it, and they still won't grow at all. Any help is appreciated.

I have 2 guesses:

1. I think the stairs may be obstructing it

Disclaimer: I don’t play Java, so maybe it’s some kind of parity difference that I’m unaware of.
