Not sure if it still works, but I think (not sure) it worked like this: The players selected to be infected would have a sort of copy of themselves around void level, and when selecting the infected, the lowest players would be picked (which should be those copys of players). So what I did is jump at the right time and try to get at the same lever / slightly lower than them, and it worked quite often.

I know an alternative way to always start off your games on the infected team
Just run right out to edge of the map and jump off right at the beginning of the game

Wait so if u die by other causes u still get infected?
