One of the biggest problems I have with tower defense is the huge team size, especially when cube craft is extremely active. A 6-player team is just too much in my opinion. If your team is bad, you can usually still win when employing certain strategies. However, there is usually always someone who interferes with the entire board, whether it is to scatter misplaced lvl 1 towers, or to place the leech in the very back, or to place mages incredibly close to each other. In the long run, especially in double-income mode, these ignorant noobs hinders the team's ability. Limiting the team size will decrease the chances of having one of these players.
In a competitive game with decent players, there is still too many players to place defensive towers. Like by mid-game, the entire field is filled with maxed archers, and the game is decided by whoever sends 2-3 waves of magma. I feel like a 4v4 or 3v3 would be better suited.

I think it is fine as it is, it's possible for games to start with 3v3 and other combos so really both are existing at the same time. It just depends if a lot of people are on or not.
I understand your concerns, but I think team sizes are okay as they are. Because of what @_The13thDoctor_ said as well as because of the coming update.
As you can read on the public notion board there are going to be solutions for the problems you addressed.
This will be fixed by the "Auto Centring Towers" and "choosing a tower upgrade path before placing the tower".
However, some things such as Mages built too close to each other or the Leach placed in the back. Cannot or will not be fixed. This is because in the end TD stays a team game and the team is as strong as its weakest link. It's all part of the learning experience that you don't need to spam Mages and place Leach at the first part of the track.
Instead of being annoyed by the ones that are not as good as you, try to teach them how to become better. That's your best option and only hope.
Hopefully this made it a bit more understandable why I'm voting 6. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me via Discord, PM or simply reacting to this message. Have a nice day!
(also, using the forums on mobile phone is a pain)
I completely agree with the concerns about bigger teams, but I'm nearly sure that these concerns will fall on deaf ears, and they will made their voices heard more than anyone else, as they are the ones who are most likely to socialize amongst these crowds (of 5 or 6 person parties), and thus respond to you here.
It is clear after playing TD for 3 years in the current format (ever since the update to include tower paths), that parties have unfair advantages, but this is just the beginning. I have no qualms with partying in general, but rather the interactions with leaderboard players, in parties, who actively misinform new players, and unnecessarily involve themselves in toxic behavior (with the party fostering hive mentality). I can affirm this as I have played on multiple stone accounts and been on the receiving end of this. I expect to make a full exposure to this effect in another post.
THIS NEEDS TO STOP, as it clearly undermines TD's ability to attract new players, and rather prioritizes long-standing players (usually with rank), and discourages growth and integrity in the community.
But as I stated at the beginning, those who are culpable will remain hidden, and pretend to care so much about the improvement of the game and the community.
Nothing will change unless those at the top are willing to change or call out this behavior...

I'm interested now tbh, could you explain this further in here or on Discord. (I prefer Discord) I really like that you just say this and are not scared of the consequences or that you might be wrong
btw, to answer the thread, I don't see massive problems with reducing team size to 4 for example. Question is, what's the problem with 6 as a team size?

I completely agree with this post. Since I began playing this game, I have seen an influx in toxicity amongst parties, specifically those with more than 4 people. Usually, these parties are trying to farm wins and intentionally misguide new players to achieve these quick wins.
New players that have been given false information by these high rank, leaderboard members end up being confused and discouraged from playing this game. In all honesty, I experienced this myself as a new player. High rank, leaderboard people intentionally gave me and other new players misguided information to use it to their advantage, for example, "Don't send witches. We can't defend them because they're too op" or "If you send witches you might have a chance against us." Although witches can be used to strengthen an attack at times, all semi-experienced players know that a simple lava potion (at least before the update) would kill all these witches. In addition, the enemy team would receive a lot of money for this, be able to easily afford their "party attack", and get their instant win. There are many more examples of this, but it would take a long time to type and explain each instance as well as the ones that follow:
I have also played multiple 2v6 games where the enemy team was comprised of 6 high rank, leaderboard individuals (these game initially began as a 6v6 but the other 4 people in my team eventually left). In these games, the enemy team would insinuate that they are the "best", say derogative/offensive statements: "You belong in the kitchen. Why are you playing this game? Go back to the kitchen" or "You are just a s-- toy. I bet [name of other person in my team] uses you all the time" or "You probably sent your nu--s to the moderators and they gave you cheats", and death threats/ suicide encouragements- "We all hate you. You should kill yourself already" or "I'm going to find where you live and kill you myself." I understand that losing to newer players can be disappointing, even more so when you're in a party of more people, but this does not explain extreme toxic behavior in parties, especially in a game like Minecraft with so many young players.
However, when fighting against these people individually, they seemed reasonable, non-toxic human beings that were only driven to toxicity in the presence of a party.
Another example is when one or two of these party members would join my team to intentionally troll. What I mean by this is that they would place level 1 archer towers everywhere without upgrading them and sending witches to the opposite team, while using lava to get all the "kills" in my team. Although they did not misplace towers, they were still trolling and taking part in "toxic party behavior" and made it impossible to play a fair game.
These players should know who they are, and they should be ashamed of their behavior. It is saddening that this game has become about being the "best" and going to any extent in order to achieve this -cheating, trolling, taking part in toxic behavior, intentionally misinforming new players, etc.. But, as you stated, these players will pretend to care about the "improvement" of this game, so long it is to their advantage, and because they are "experienced", they will be listened.

Though if Team sizes would be 4, I think there's as much chance that 75% of the players of a team leave, that would still result in a 1v4. (Which I wouldn't mind ofc xD)

This is a terrible experience for anyone, and I'm sorry for you and I apologize on the behalf of ranked players, not everyone is like that. That said, a ton of what you said happened to you (telling you the wrong troops are good to send, coming onto your team and trolling, suicide encouragement), is not allowed and you should record/screenshot when this happens. If players get punished for behavior like that, it's less likely to happen in the future.

I understand the '6s' is a commonplace competitive mode for gameplay across many platforms, but there are too many indicators that suggest this is not beneficial for new player growth in this game. I can sum them up into two categories: my experience as well as science.
Experience
I have been playing for over three years now, on and off, and I have probably way too much time into this game. But since the update three years ago, I sensed certain communities forming, often entirely among ranked players and often on the leaderboard. I am not necessarily saying that the game size should be 4v4, but A PARTY LIMIT SHOULD BE 4v4, not game size, but party size. This is due to the fact that when new players join a game with 'pros' or 'top players' who are all ranked, the 'top players' will have to work with others to compete well. They will need to inform their team (as opposed to misinforming the other team), and they will need to help noobs learn (instead of hindering the noobs on the other team). Mind here that the 'OTHER TEAM' is everyone who is not in their party, so long as 6 is the party limit.
But as you can read in Heavenly's post above, misinformation is the tip of the iceberg. Groupthink is a serious problem, ESPECIALLY IN GROUPS THAT ARE ANONYMOUS AND WELL ACQUAINTED. Seeing many of the same players ALWAYS playing together, trash talking, talking down to any noobs (or stone ranks), and making even more inflammatory comments, simply because of ... a video game? It's disgusting, and I do believe that accountability is the primary concern, and in this case, a reduction of party size would help.
Science
I must disclaim that I am obviously not a researcher in the area of group psychology, but you can look for papers or articles on 'group think,' 'optimal group size for [X],' or 'crowd bias.' When you do you find many saying that 6 can in fact be an optimal size for decision making etc. But what they emphasize even more than numbers in such papers, is the quality of the people involved. Many say 'there is no magic number,' since it depends on the output that is observed, as well as the diversity of the group.
The Output - As seen above, there are too many instances of bad output for me to just ignore it. I have attempted to document specific cases, but ultimately I feel it doesn't matter as much, since I can understand how hive-minded people can become. I instead wanted to focus on the party system, not the individuals, as it clearly has enabled them. I won't claim that 4 is the best number, but rather that something should be done to mitigate these issues.
Group Diversity - Many of the studies (including those emphasizing 6) include statements about the quality of individuals and how they relate to one another. Groups of 6 at a conference, who barely know each other, is obviously very different from a group of 6 anonymous strangers who know more about each other (or at least interact more often). In the latter case, many of the group often devalue as much as half of the group's opinion, causing 1 or 2 to completely control decisions, moral or strategic, conversation, etc. This is precisely the concerns we are talking about.
To reiterate, I am unsure if 4s would solve the problem, but since you can't force people to 'behave' proactively, it seems that some rethinking of the party system would greatly improve the experience for not only veterans of the game like myself, but also for the new players coming in, especially during an update influx of new players.
The main goal of tower defense is "teamwork" among the team members. 6 members is really a good number, not that much and not that less. I think the best use of your idea is to make something like "solo tower defense". I don't honestly know how should it be (like smaller maps and abilities), but I think it might be a good idea tho!

team work is what goes wrong in every gamemode when you play with random people. eggwars, skywars, lucky islands.... its a problem that cant be fixed. i dont think solo would work, it sounds quite slow compared to normal and can easily be abused to farm stats as it would be 1v1. 4v4 would work better as its a decent amount of people per lobby to make it quick and balanced in case some people leave.
Though if Team sizes would be 4, I think there's as much chance that 75% of the players of a team leave, that would still result in a 1v4. (Which I wouldn't mind ofc xD)
its better then 5v1 :p and... well, you're right there, its sometimes even better when you're alone against a full team of noobs hahaha. you can easily win with just spiders if they dont place enough mages, which is so stupid x3
I think 6v6 is too much for some maps. With the large variation of map/length size a standard 12 player lobby is going to be too much for a lot of the maps. Imo it should be 4v4/5v5/6v6 depending on the map length/amount of tower spaces.

This only needs a short answer: I'm gonna forward it and discuss it with the people who worked on the update. I think you got a point here and the video you posted at the other thread reminds me of the problem you speak of. I'm definitely gonna make work of this and get back to you asap.
Thanks for the explanation and feedback, you are really helping the community out and I appreciate what you've done so far. Keep up the good work!
I think a lot of people love this game bcs they get to chill and play with there friends,6v6 is perfect imo and it would be a huge uneeded change to make it less.

Thank you. I understand that not everyone is like that, and I am very much grateful for that. At the time, I was not aware of rules, banning, etc., but I began doing that, and I will definitely continue to do this in the future. I am only bringing this up because it could really affect someone, such as a kid playing this game. I only wish that these kinds of "experienced" players actually cared about the integrity of the game and the betterment of the TD Community, rather than prioritizing rushing wins and promoting a toxic environment, which is further worsened by big parties.

Thanks in advance for understanding. Stay safe and take care!

No problem :] I will say that I've been the TD noob at one point and I haven't experienced any of this behavior, but I'm ranked myself and I play with other ranked players for the most part, so that might be why. Rushing wins imo is perfectly fine and will happen no matter what the party size is, but the bullying/trolling I'm hearing about needs to stop, so I'm glad you brought this up.
It seems that there are two major issues now coming to clarity with the 'big parties'. One is abuse / toxicity, and the other being misinformation / degenerating 'good' gameplay, both of which obviously hinder new players and growth in the community.
Heavenly55 and Shotgun on Abuse / Toxicity
I have known Heavenly55 for some time, and the truth is that I didn't want to tell her what she should do regarding bringing up some of the experiences she has had. I am not surprised by the comments in her response:
I have also played multiple 2v6 games where the enemy team was comprised of 6 high rank, leaderboard individuals (these game initially began as a 6v6 but the other 4 people in my team eventually left). In these games, the enemy team would insinuate that they are the "best", say derogative/offensive statements: "You belong in the kitchen. Why are you playing this game? You should kill yourself already" or "I'm going to find where you live and kill you myself." I understand that losing to newer players can be disappointing, even more so when you're in a party of more people, but this does not explain extreme toxic behavior in parties, especially in a game like Minecraft with many young players.
Some of these things I have witnessed myself. I honestly may not have believed them otherwise.
We can of course say 'it's just a game' or 'chill out' or 'don't be a prude,' but all of these don't address the actual content of the concern. I can understand her frustration:
Thank you. I understand that not everyone is like that, and I am very much grateful for that. The logic of victim blaming may be appealing, but in reality costs lives, livelihoods, mental health, even years to recover. Would a woman in a compromising financial situation want to bring up the unnecessary drama of her abusive but 'bread-winning' husband? Would a victim of sexual harassment in the workplace want to compromise her job if her boss was the perpetrator? The list goes on and on.
It is in fact the perpetrator in each of these cases that caused the drama, and they rely on people NOT SPEAKING OUT, to get away with what they do.
I am hopeful that Heavenly55 is only speaking on her behalf because it doesn't affect her. In the comments seen above, this is borderline sexual harassment, or could be emotional abuse ESPECIALLY TO A CHILD. We may forget this, but the main pull for Minecraft are CHILDREN. Cyberbullying should be elevated to mental abuse in the case of children; aggressive sexism to sexual harassment; and the exposure to illicit language / themes to emotional abuse.
I understand that what Shotgun says here has good intention, but again to shame, or blame, or be opposed to those speaking out about the wrongful acts upon them is sadly too real of a thing, and I truly hope isn't taken lightly, no matter the situation.
Heavenly55 and Deann on Misinformation / Gameplay Degeneration
Heavenly55's comments on some typical party misinformation behavior is also present in my experience:
My intent and as I believe is hers as well is not to cause drama for specific people, otherwise the names would have been named. It is unfortunate that this occurs, as I really wish the top players would be graciously willing to help new players out, giving them tips and guided (which I can acknowledge some of them for contributing some guides on these forums). But more than reaching the players who read forums or play in these groups, to potentially reach the 'noobs' is even more important. I'm unsure of how many noobs frequent these kinds of discussions, but I don't think they should have to in order to be benefitted by the communities efforts.
No problem :] I will say that I've been the TD noob at one point and I haven't experienced any of this behavior, but I'm ranked myself and I play with other ranked players for the most part, so that might be why. Not everyone will experience this behavior, but where there are parties of 6 rushing wins, and they are backed by 'groups of friends,' it will inevitably happen.
As for rushing wins, I won't agree that it's 'fine,' unless it can be shown to not discourage enjoyable gameplay for the other team involved. I don't like losing of course, but if I know what I did wrong then I can improve and do better. But if I have no concept of how I lost other than the opposing team have 6x as many 'decent' players, then I can't improve. This process will occur over and over again for new players, discouraging them from playing, and it will degenerate the meta and gameplay with the more experienced ones.
The main goal of tower defense is "teamwork" among the team members. 6 members is really a good number, not that much and not that less.
