Note: This thread isn't about CCG nostalgia, but Minecraft in general. These are some struggles that new kids will never understand, but also some great memories that they'll never experience.
Notice anything odd about this screenshot? This was taken back in the days when there was no hunger bar. Back then, there were no potions nor enchantments that could increase your movement speed, nor a Creative Mode if you were on console. There was no saturation either, so food would be consumed the instant you right-clicked. There wasn't an eating animation either, the food would just vanish immediately. Food would increase your health. For instance, eating bread would instantly restore I believe 2.5 hearts.
Spiders were the biggest problem in Survival Mode, because they moved faster than the player. This is because there was no sprinting. Diamonds were scarcer than they've ever been, due to an absence of enchantments to increase yield and the speed of mining.
World quality was judged not on the quality and detail of your builds, but rather how many diamonds you had found and whether you'd built a cobblestone castle yet.
Minigames were hell. Imagine fighting somebody when restoring health was so quick and easy. Imagine playing spleef without the ability to sprint, or build battle when the gold block was the best-looking object in the game. Pixelart was considered awesome, no matter how dumb it actually looked or whether you watched a YouTube tutorial to make it.
Lastly, you couldn't tame or breed animals. Nope, you'd have to stockpile eggs if you wanted to have pets, because they'd despawn if you off-screened them. Despite food being incredibly useful back then, it was also a lot harder to come by. Cakes were basically considered god food. A block that you could eat, and in multiple bites?
Oldschool Minecraft possessed the power to keep you playing infinitely, simply because everything took so long.
And then, this came out...
I still remember it to this day, my friendos showing off their houses that were literally comprised of nothing more than diamond blocks. But, we were thirteen years old, we thought it was cool. Ironically though, Creative Mode actually made people's builds worse. Instead of making use of an array of blocks that are easily accessible, people began to make entire cities only out of gold, diamond and iron blocks. Bows were also given a durability, meaning that they began to degrade with use and break.
I admit, I once tried making a 120x120 swimming pool using only iron blocks :<
When the End came out, people's priorities changed. No longer was the game about getting as many diamonds as possible; it was about showing off the dragon egg to your friends, who probably didn't know about the piston trick that let you pick it up.
I miss big changes like this the most. When a Minecraft update came out you'd be crazily excited about all the new content, but nowadays we just get a couple of new blocks and parrots. Where's my Cerberus boss that drops the fabled obsidian platebody, or the Iron Goliath that drops an emerald bow? Come to think of it, why isn't there obsidian armour yet? Diamond armour has been the meta since the game was released, come on already! :/
Minecraft YouTubers were blowing up faster than ever before, with everybody trying to get in on the action. There were also those really cringy Minecraft Music Videos that have thankfully died down in popularity.
In fact, it was this that gave me the idea to make this thread:
I found this in my 'Watch Later' playlist on YouTube, I must've saved it there about four years ago. I also have a video tutorial on how to build a big creeper statue, and a parody about being on an island. The song was apparently copyrighted and is now terrible, but with over 150 million views, most of you have probably already watched the original.
Odds are, most of the people reading this thread got into the game because a YouTuber they liked also started playing it. For me, it was a Call of Duty YouTuber by the name of 'BobLobLaw1978', who made Survival, Skyblock and Super-hostile lets-plays. After watching a few videos I was convinced that this was the greatest game of all time, and bought it the next day. In retrospect, I don't think I could stand playing oldschool Minecraft again. I loved it at the time, but now that we have things like sprinting, enchanting and saturation, I doubt I could bare to lose them.
