How to advance beyond the basics?

I've tried to look up some guides for this, like to get as good as the 'tier players', yet I haven't found anything useful. So I assume it's all just practice? Or are there some actual things to keep in mind?

I wouldn't recommend to look up any guides on how to get better at pvp, in this case beyond the basics. Watching is less useful than anything else.
PvP is like maths: If you want to get better, you have to practice. How? You can either do duels / FFA or play Skywars and other pvp modes. I would recommend duels as it's, in my opinion, the best way to improve and learn. Keep in mind that pvp skills are sometimes trial and error, meaning you'll learn many combos and abilities that might not come in handy for you / be your style. At this point, it's just patience... You don't improve from "noob" to "pro" in 1 week.
There's no secret, it's just practice.
