For some reason, I can’t smelt stuff in a furnace, am I doing anything wrong?

whenever I try to smelt wood in a furnace, i use oak planks, but for some reason it won’t smelt? Am I doing something wrong?

if you want to make charkcoal you cant get it with planks you only get it with Oake wood

Any wood will do to get charcoal, but the wood must be placed in the top input. Wood planks in the furnace can be used only for fuel.
