Well there really isn't another way and personally I like them

Well I am doing in a single player world

I will add on about 3 blocks to the side which would also fix the fact of small pvp room

Just to remind you this is for 12 players 1 per team, so its not really so small What do you mean by fairly unsafe? Increasing the islands will make them a bit bigger than I would have to redo all the detail and all the measurements would be off and making them bigger would make them larger...

If you used world edit why is the the boom of the island lacking tons of detail, also the middle is shapped weird the mountains are messed up and the tree isn't custom and looks ugly and doesn't seem to be standards of the regular eggwars maps and also theres no void
