Personally I get 17 diamonds. I spend 5 on the diamond gen, and the rest on a good pickaxe. (This is for OP).

Depends on how many diamond gens there are.
I usually either get 27 or 15 (normal mode) and some gold. Chain helmet, rest iron, and a sword either diamond or iron.
With that I go back and gather more diamonds for bows, shields, compasses etc.
