Most holidays have a religious background if you search it. It is just about how the people share it through different cultures with people who don't celebrate it, primarily for economic reasons. Ramadan is not different, it just didn't get enough sharing across people by accepting manners.

Islamic mosques are the only symbols that could be seen as such. As for the crescent moon, it is a naturally occurring event, it's not like the crescent moon was just made for Islam and Ramadan.

Ramadan could be seen as nights and lanterns only and the challenge of not eating from dusk to down to help stay in shape. Ramadan doesn't have to be religious too!
