If you see someone in need of help , don't hesitate and give those people a helping hand. My faith in humanity is sadly not restored. Don't think about yourself but also think about the people who are helpless. Listen to people who're in need of telling their story and don't turn around when someone wants to have a good talk with you.
Restore the faith in humanity
Actually, there are plenty of people doing acts of kindness. You don't here of any because of A) the media is focused on politics and school shootings and B) 21st century has become a gossip column.
"caring about themselves" isn't really a problem imo. If you have your own things to do, do those before you start with others. If you screw yourself over while helping others, there's no telling what kind of consequences you've got to deal with. It may seem selfish, but think about yourself before you think about others. Screwing yourself over because of helping would be an ironic way to go about life.
To an extent, caring for yourself is the best thing to do. Self love, self worth, and self guidance will allow you to find yourself and help you understand yourself more and more. I believe that once you find yourself and your full worth, you will begin help other people. It doesn’t necessarily have to be monitary - it could be some good ‘ol mentoring, but you’re still helping someone.
