It is it just doesn't work. And I understand where you're coming from.

You would open the cosmetics option, I think that's what it is, then there will be buddies option. Click/tap on that, and if you scroll down, you should see a "Remove" button, and that unequips your buddy.

It's a visual glitch, it should work if you just put the wood in the crafting table.

Well I just tested it, the buddies don't for me, but I can't seem to unequip the buddy so that obviously is a bug.

It isn't a problem that can be fixed though, it isn't a bug. Just simply unequip your buddy that your using would fix it.
