I recommend you to use: GroupManager due to it being a lot easier to setup then other plugins mentioned above. Atleast that is my experience.

About point 1: I totally agree with you on that point because I find myself struggling to choose a kit. Maybe make it that you can set your own default?? Point 2: i dont think that this would be happening since that not so many players are 1.8 anymore.
