If you show you're not interested, they'll get bored and leave, why? Because they can't get a reaction out of you no matter what they say.
What do you get in return? Usually they will get even triggered because obviously you do not seem to care whatsoever, that may result in them getting more heated up and swearing in the end and that means... report time! It's your victory.

This can easily be abused to make it look like they were the ones who started the flaming. Also it's kind of childish and unsatisfying if you can understand what I'm getting at. I'm not saying that it's useless to be quiet, there are a lot of benefits to being patient but sometimes the mindset changes and you immediately have a different opinion. I've had these kind of days where I would feel sympathy for the kids who 100% broke the rules and swore or something like that. I'd just ignore them since I'm in a good mindset. But other days, oh boy, I ever take the slightest chance to report these people. No mercy.

Well, do whatever makes you feel better. There are many ways for people to handle this.
This is just my opinion on what may work best but others may feel different. Just remember, as long as it doesn't break the rule ye!
